Webinar: Open the Land Registry! How to respond to the Land Registry consultation
Join Guy Shrubsole and the DCC team online on Thursday 12 November to find out what's proposed in the government’s new consultation, why it matters, and ideas for how to complete your response before the 22 December deadline.
The government has opened a consultation on making Land Registry data on who owns land in England and Wales more open. It's the biggest step towards land transparency in 150 years, but it isn't certain yet.
Right now, ownership information sits behind a paywall. Finding out who owns a single plot costs £7, and finding out who owns most of the country would cost nearly £12 million.
The core proposal is a free, public dataset of who owns the larger land holdings, which make up around 95% of registered land, while leaving out almost all homes. The consultation also proposes free access to title registers for land owned by companies, and a push to complete the register, since around a tenth of land in England and Wales is still unregistered.
As Guy Shrubsole has warned, some big landowners and their lobbyists won't want this information made public, and they will respond to the consultation. The proposals could still be blocked unless we all speak up too.

Open the Land Registry: a guide to responding before 22 December Thursday 12 November, 10:00-11:30 GMT, online
We will:
- explain what the government is proposing, and why it matters
- show how communities, campaigners and journalists already use land ownership data, and what would be possible if it were free
- walk through the questions that matter most, with talking points to help you answer them
- show you how to add your own examples, which make responses most powerful
You don't need to be a land nerd or a policy expert. All are very welcome to join.
Can't make it?
You can still respond before 22 December, online. Guy's question-by-question guide walks you through how you could respond to each part. Let’s do this!
